Abstract: the article considers the existing approaches to the definition of economic security, the evolution of this economic category, and defines the specifics of assessing the economic security of the region. The object of research of economic security of the region – its territory is studied. The subject of the study is the population living on the territory of the region. Approaches to the definition of economic security are considered in detail, which allowed identifying a number of contradictions in the assessment of its essential content, the nature of which can be explained by the fact that the methodology and criteria for assessing economic security were dependent on the geopolitical environment and targets in the field of its provision, specific to a particular country or region. It is revealed that the general problem of applying a particular method of assessing the economic security of the region is a meaningful and qualitative assessment of the system of indicators on which it is based. Internal and external threats to the economic security of the region are considered. Comparative analysis of methods of estimation of economic security of a region that demonstrates the problem of choosing the object of monitoring and compliance method of estimation of economic safety of region with the object of study. The methodology for assessing the economic security of the region is based on a set of performance indicators that serve as indicators for evaluating the effectiveness of its development.
