However, many societies, especially in Africa, face difficulties in implementation of these principles. The article analyzes the development of institutionalized social protection of older people in Kenya and its correspondence to modern standards. The position and social protection of older people in Kenya is mainly influenced by a large share of informal economy, prevalence of rural population, high level of poverty, climate changes and other factors. Active development of institutionalized social protection substituting traditional institutions of family support begun in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, as a result of political transformations in the country. The article concludes that there was a significant progress in social protection over the last two decades, mainly due to the use of non-contributory mechanisms such as OPCT, HSNP et al. Of a special importance is the introduction of the IJSC universal pensions in 2017.
