Abstract: the article considers the issues of modern terminology in hiking tourism. The author reviews the sub-types of non-categorical hiking. The hiking trails in the Vladimir region were explored. It was determined that the leading role in the design of walking routes in the region is played by the “Unified Directorate of Specially Protected Natural Territories” of the regional administration and the administration of the Meshchera National Park. To date, the following terms in pedestrian tourism are distinguished: hiking and trekking. The fundamental difference between the first term and the secondone is in the place of travel organization and purpose. The article defines the role of a unified approach to the development of environmental routes across Vladimir Region as part of specially protected natural areas of the region.
