Abstract: the article considers one of the most important economic categories – labor productivity or output, which largely determines not only the efficiency of using all categories of personnel of machine-building enterprises, but also their entire work as a whole. This category is studied not only at the level of individual enterprises, but also is an important macroeconomic indicator determined for the country’s industry, which in the world practice determines the level of its economic potential.
The article deals with modern methods of determining output: natural, cost, and labor, and the indicators used for this purpose. The use of these methods in practice is analyzed.
It is emphasized that the most universal method is the cost method, as labor productivity indicators can be compared for individual enterprises, even of different specialization.
The factors of growth of output, which contain certain reserves of increase of labour productivity at enterprises: increase of technical level of production; measures to improve the quality of governance and organization of production; increase in the number of products and changes in the structure of the production program of the enterprise; the influence of the level of cooperation of production; expansion of production capacity and others.
External and internal factors that determine labor productivity are analyzed. Attention is focused on the importance of the correct ratio between the growth of labor productivity and the average wage in the enterprise.
