Abstract: topical issues of investment activities of the Russian insurance companies are considered. The empirical research of profitability of insurance operations, features of formation of the investment portfolios of insurers in modern conditions is conducted and their investment attractiveness as the managing organizations is characterized. The reserves of economic growth connected with use of the potential opportunities given by the domestic stock market are revealed. Results of the analysis of dynamics of capitalization of the most attractive sector – the stock market – from 2000 are presented. Offers on development of investment activity of insurance companies in the stock market of Russia for growth of profitability of investments are proved. Fundamental investment factors which need to be taken into account at implementation of investments in securities are characterized.
