Abstract: the article is devoted to the study and analysis of trends in the transformation of the institution of the family in modern Russian conditions. The institution of the family is the most important component, the foundation of any state, so the healthier and more stable is the state of the institution, the higher the welfare of the state is as a whole. Unfortunately, the ongoing modernization of modern society has led to the emergence of a multitude of marriage and family models, as well as to the devaluation of traditional value orientations, on which the traditional family was previously based. As a part of the study, we analyzed open statistical data on the number of marriages and divorces in Russia for the period from 2000 to 2018, and identified a decrease in the number of marriages. It was assumed that there were two main reasons for the decrease in the number of marriages and divorces in Russia, based on a summary of the results of a survey conducted by the Rostov region civil register office in 2018 on marriage and divorce. Also, a secondary analysis of the results of sample monitoring of reproductive behavior of the population and relationships in the family was carried out by the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation in 2017. The questionnaire survey conducted among the students of RANEPA, aimed at revealing the attitude of young people to the institution of marriage, in particular to the official registration of relations, which accurately reflected the general trends in the country on this issue, turned out to be quite indicative. The crisis of the family as a social institution is also manifested in the degradation of the institution of marriage relations, namely in the increase in the number of unregistered marriages, the emergence of non-traditional types of marriage (“civil marriage”, guest marriage, weekend marriage, and etc.)
